HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
What goals do you have for the new year?
How much weight do you want to lose this year? How much money do you want to make this year? How much weight do you want to gain this year? Are you gonna start dating again? What bad habits are you going to cut this year? How are you going to eat differently this year? Are you going after the promotion this year? Are you moving out of your parents house this year? Are you gonna pay your debt off this year?
In summary the beginning of the year feels like a 5 second celebration and a month long dedication to building habits we beat ourselves up for not having.
Let me be clear, it is wise to have goals. It is also good to practice the discipline necessary to follow through on your goals.
Yet, the beginning of the year typically feels like a race to make up for our personally deemed shortcomings.
The new year has me thinking about my goals and my life. Reflecting on what I did well and what I have been struggling with. As I reflect on new beginnings and fresh opportunities, I am considering what it would look like to make God my priority this year. To put God first in all things (Matthew 6:33) and really make God’s opinion the center of my decisions this year.
Reflection Questions:
What is your word for this year? (Or theme of the year, a word or phrase God has put on your heart)
List some goals for the following areas in your life. Financial, Mental, Physical, Spiritual and Relational.
What are you most afraid of? Does this fear show up in your goal setting often? Where does the fear come from (media, life event, insecurity, etc.)? Think about how you can shift a fear into a positive goal.
Example:
Fear: I am so scared that if I gain 5-10lbs no one will want to marry me.
Goal:
- I will consistently remind myself food is to fuel my body to enjoy my life and necessary for me to live.
- I will drink x liters of water daily
- I will take an entire class or attend 2x counseling session about food/health this year.
